A GREAT NEWS FOR L’ÎLE-BIZARD AND THE REGION

L’Île-Bizard–Sainte-Geneviève Borough (Montreal), June 17th, 2021 – The Association pour la protection des espaces verts de L’Île-Bizard (APEVIB) is welcoming this great news for our dear island and all of its inhabitants: the attribution of a humanized landscape status to the western part of the island, as well as part of Rivière des Prairies and Lake of Two Mountains. This represents over 18sq km of green and blue spaces!

Among other things, this category V status ensures the conservation of biodiversity in the targeted area and a protection against “… mining, gas and oil extraction, construction of pipelines, introduction of invading species, as well as residual waste or snow dumping…”

This represents a major victory for all Montrealers and for generations to come. “This zone is part of a series of ecological environments interconnected through waterways which make out a green canopy all over the western part of the island of Montreal. These are like a giant lung that filters the air and they act as a true oasis of faunal and floristic biodiversity. The ecological benefits of this status will profit all of the West-Island and have positive repercussions over the Greater Montreal area, the Montérégie, the Basses-Laurentides and Laval, as well as the hydrographic region of the Ottawa River. It is a great day for biodiversity in the south-west of the province!” rejoices Marie-Chantal Scholl, president and founder of the APEVIB.

The paysage humanisé status was made possible thanks to concerted efforts by visionary citizens and dedicated civil servants from the City of Montreal who worked on the project for many years. The APEVIB congratulates all of the people who took part in this great accomplishment, directly or indirectly. We thank the Kanien‘kehá:ka community of Kahnawake warmly, as well as their ancestors who have cared for these lands and waters since time immemorial, to the benefit of all living beings.

We will follow the implementation of this status with great interest. It will be a pleasure to participate in this collective work together.
